Laser Dentistry: Patient Perspective on Painless Treatment While dental lasers have helped advance treatment, not until recently patients have felt the benefit, literally. In this interview, Tina Cressman describes her experience in receiving treatment of cavities without anesthesia from Dr. Yooson Kim, who uses Convergent Dental's Solea CO2 laser. Upstairs: Dr. Yooson Kim of Family Dentistry of Morgantown performs laser dental treatment, as dental treatment has undergone profound changes. Since the mid-1990s, DentistryIQ, its associated publications, and others have thoroughly chronized advances in dental lasers, which have allowed new treatment and better results. But in the midst of exciting technological changes, the patient's experience has been largely overlooked. Maybe that's because dental lasers didn't have a significant impact on the patient's experience so far. With , dental patients are experiencing treatment without anesthesia and new levels of comfort. Treatments are more convenient and comparable costs are comparable. In fact, it is not exaggerated to say that the CO2 laser has the potential to change old (and phobias) conceptions about visiting the dentist. In other words, the association of a dentist and a drill may soon be relegated to the annals of medical history. With the District of the Ultimate, An example of the new dental experience can be found in the history of Tina Cressman, a 48-year-old Pennsylvania. In 2010, Cressman suffered multiple procedures during 20 dental visits thanks to five unexpected cavities. Continuous complications left Cressman afraid of any future dental work. But a turn of the destination landed her in the office of a new dentist, Yooson Kim, DDS, who had integrated a Solea 9.3 μm CO2 laser into her treatment workflow. When Cressman was diagnosed with more dental decay, Dr. Kim introduced her with the painless laser treatment option. For the rest of the story, read our interview with Cressman and Dr. Kim next. Interview with Tina Cressman and Yooson Kim, DDSInterview with Tina Cressman and Yooson Kim, DDSAbove: Tina Cressman and Dr. Yooson Kim, DDSDIQ: Thank you for talking to us about your laser dental experience. Tina, could you tell us a little about your oral health record? DIQ:Tina: I have actually had an interesting experience with going to the dentist. As a child and a teenager, I never missed a dental visit. I was religiously at my dentist every six months, the same dentist I'd been to for my entire life. We advanced to my adulthood when my husband and I moved in, I was forced to find a new dentist. When examining and reviewing my records, my new dentist informed me that "Suddenly" had five cavities. Unfortunately, we discovered that all these existing cavities that were never addressed by my previous dentist. Tina: Immediately, the five cavities were filled with the "traditional form". Three of the cavities were so severe that I had to do root canals and applied crowns. I had to have about 20 dental visits within nine months due to complications due to neglect. It was a difficult time in my life. Between the time off of work, needles, numbness, grinding of the drill, and the time of post-operative healing, the procedures were atrocious to me. My new dentist at that time (which was not Dr. Kim), did a procedure at a time trying to spread it so it wouldn't be so exhausting for me. He finally sent me to a specialist. DIQ: He started seeing Dr. Kim in 2010. Before Dr. Kim used a laser in you, it seems you were very preoccupied by seeing the dentist. Tina: I started seeing Dr. Kim because I had a dental emergency. My dentist was on vacation, and my husband suggested I go see his doctor, who was Dr. Kim. Change to Dr. Kim turned out to be a disguised blessing. Was he apprentice? Of course! After that kind of story, the grinding of the teeth, the sound of the drill, the needles, the graft of the skin, the pain, all those things... you get to a point where you really get your own health. In this case, they were my teeth because of fear of what will be the next horrible procedure. DIQ: When did Dr. Kim approach you about using a laser for treatment? Tina: In February 2016, it was programmed to make a deep filling. I was afraid of the date because, as far as I knew, I was going to have it pierced and filled the traditional way. I've programmed work-free time and had a nervous stomach all the disk there and in the waiting room. Tina: For people who really fear needles, this anxiety and fear feels good before the appointment. I was literally sick to my stomach. While waiting in the office, all kinds of crazy thoughts ran through my mind about what was coming. They called me and I sat in the chair. Dr. Kim came in and said, "Good morning." Then he said, "So you are here today to make this filling. I have a new machine. It's called the Solea laser. It is approved by the FDA, and I am one of the only dentists in this area that has this right now." He basically said I could fill my cavity. After she said that, I really don't remember anything else because that's all I needed to hear to make me happy! Dr. Kim: Establishing trust with patients is fundamental to all dentists. It makes treatment planning easier and smoothes the way to introduce new technologies to patients. Dr. Kim: So, Tina, you thought, "The part of the procedure that fears most is eliminated?" DIQ:Tina: I said, "Wait a minute, you mean you're gonna put this new device in my mouth, you can fix my cavity, and I don't even have to have a drink today?" And Dr. Kim said, "Yeah, you don't have to have a drink today." At this point, I had been working on my mouth for many years, and I had a good relationship with her. Yes, Dr. Kim says it's approved by the FDA and I won't feel any pain and I don't need a needle, I trust her, so I felt good with the decision to use the Solea laser. How was the procedure? DIQ:Tina: Well, she said, "We're going to be working with the laser and we're gonna run water with it. You will be able to feel your bite afterwards, and will not feel any numbness afterwards." She came in, and 15 minutes later she was made! Tina: Before the procedure, you don't know what to expect. As I'm lying there, I'm a little apprehensive, thinking, "OK, at some point here is going to be some kind of pain. It's going to hurt." I kept bragging because I know how this goes, and just like she said, we're done! And I looked at her and said, "Wait, have you finished in my mouth?" And she said, "Yeah, we're all finished." And I was in total unbelief. She said, "How does your bite feel?" And I said, "It's perfect. I can feel my bite and I have absolutely no pain!" Dr. Kim: Tina is very honest and open about her experiences and expectations. I know dental visits cause great anxiety for her. She usually fixes. With Solea, the procedure is over before you have the opportunity to get anxious. Dr. Kim: Up: Dr. Kim provides treatment with Solea CO2DIQ laser: Tina, you say you did not feel pain. You must have felt some sense, right? Tina: It's just a sense of light. I felt a little cooling. They're working on your mouth, and you're aware that they're doing something, but it's different because you don't have the pain of the needle, you don't have to sit there and wait to be numb, and you don't have to wait for another needle. You don't have to worry halfway so you're gonna go "un-numb" and get more anesthesia. That's what I kept waiting for. I kept thinking, "There's gonna be some kind of big shake." When he said we were done, I remember feeling a huge sense of relief, and I had no pain! I just sat there thinking "I'm done, wow. . . what a totally different experience from the traditional method of cavity filling. "Tina: Dr. Kim: Patients feel fresh air and fog, but it is not pain. Solea works to prepare the cavity treatment. It has an anaesthetic effect so that patients do not feel the cavity prep or the fillings that are placed. At the same time, patients are not numb, so they can feel their bite, speak normally, eat and drink, and simply follow with daily routines immediately. Dr. Kim: DIQ: And the sound of the laser? DIQ:Tina: I don't remember anything that was totally horrible. It wasn't like that grinding drilling sound, but you listen to the operating tools. Dr. Kim is doing his job and using the foot pedal, and the water is running and the suction is going, all the normal sounds he expects to hear. It was nothing like the traditional drill, or what I like to call the "jackhammer" gossip and grind your tooth. It was nothing like that. Tina:DIQ: Did you get any surprise about laser treatment? Tina: Everyone has a busy schedule today. With my work, time is very valuable. I took time from work and I was late, but I could talk on the phone, have conversations with people, have lunch, and not worry about biting my lip or talking confusing. For me, it was huge that I could do a dental job and then jump back to my daily activities without any discomfort or discomfort. Dr. Kim: When I end up with laser procedures, I love to see the expression on my patients' faces when I can say, "You're finished. You can eat and drink immediately, and there are no restrictions." Dr. Kim: DIQ: Tina, would you recommend this treatment to your family and friends? Tina: Of course! I share my story with anyone who says they have a next dental appointment. At one point, my daughter had to have eight full cavities, and they all became traditional. It's so hard for us to see our children in pain. After my Solea experience, I know that my children will never have to experience those needles or that kind of pain again. I couldn't wait to go home and tell my husband about my Solea laser experience and how I wouldn't have to experience needles again. At lunch the other day I was talking about it, and some of my coworkers were like, "Where is your dentist located? I have to check this new machine." We're glad you had a great experience. Is there anything else you'd like to add? Tina: I think it's worth mentioning that a concern that most of us have is when something new hits the market, especially technology, we think it's going to be expensive. So we ask ourselves, can we pay for it? I was wondering how much more expensive this treatment would cost compared to traditional treatment. To my surprise, I did not notice any increase in what was owed to my dentist because of this laser procedure. So if people think it's gonna cost more, that's not necessarily the case. People are always looking at their wallet, and I think it's important for dentists to know that their patients aren't going to be beaten with a big bill because of their new services. I don't know how other dentists bill for this service, but it didn't seem to have any major impact on my insurance accounts. Tina: I don't want to go back in my dental history, but it's a big part of why I'm a Solea laser fan. I am so grateful that you have given me a new perspective of any future dental problem for me and my family. We will not have any more traditional filling done and we will always welcome the Solea laser. Dr. Kim: Solea is really amazing. It also works well with children. As Tina said, children will never face the fear of needles and injections. Most of the battle in treating children is numbing them. Even if you are successful in getting them numb, you may not be able to do the procedures because they are too emotional and will not open your mouth again. Solea does so there is no battle at all and makes these visits more fun for all of us. Solea is also great with adults, especially those who have had traumatic dental experiences, such as Tina. Patients really appreciate the Solea laser experience. There is no more anxiety, fear, or terrible feeling of numbness later. Why should someone go voluntarily to a dentist not sunny when you can really enjoy your dental experience with Solea? I think Solea is a paradigm shift for dentistry.
