Here's Why You Should Actually Care About The Expiration Date On Your Birth Control Pills | SELF
Why I'm expelling birth control pills If you take birth control pills, you don't want to take the chance that your pills are ineffective. Do you see the birth control pills? If so, do they still work? Keep reading to find out. Contraceptive pills are a form of hormonal birth control. They are available as combination pills or minipills. Combination pills contain estrogen and progestin hormones. Minipills only contain progestin. Combined pills work to prevent pregnancy in three ways. First, hormones stop ovulating. Second, they thicken the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from travelling to an egg if released. Finally, they reduce the lining of the uterus to help prevent the implant. The progestin found in the minipill functions in a similar way. This hormone also stops ovulation and thickens the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching an egg. The expiration date on any medication helps determine whether the product is safe and effective. The use of expired drugs is risky and may be harmful. When a medicine expires, it may not be so powerful. The chemical composition of the medication can also change. At this point, manufacturers can no longer guarantee that the medication is not deteriorating. Because of this, taking expired birth control pills can result in an unwanted pregnancy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires manufacturers to describe a expiration date in the packaging for all medicines. The date can be printed on the label or stamped on the pill container. If a month is listed but not a year, it is understood that the pills expire the last day of that month. For example, if you have a pack of pills that expire in May of the current year, you can still take these pills for that month. However, you wouldn't want to take this package at any time after that month. You must have correctly expired birth control pills. Most drug pack inserts have disposal instructions, or you can check if there is one in your area. Note that most pharmacies will not exchange expired pill packages for new ones. If you decide to get rid of the pills expired in the trash, the FDA suggests these removal guidelines: If you take expired birth control pills, you increase the risk of pregnancy. If you discover that your pills have expired, use a birth control method as a condom until you can start a new pill package. It can be easy to let the birth control pills expire without even realizing it. If you receive more than one month of supply at a time, make sure you use the oldest package first. You can also maximize the effectiveness of your pill by taking it at the same time every day. Birth control pills are effective when taken at the same time every day without losing a dose. This is considered "perfect use". If you lose a dose or take the pill at a different time each day, the pill is about effective. This is considered "normal use." Combined birth control pills are available in packages of 21 or 28 days. In both types of packages, there are 21 pills containing hormones. In the case of 28-day packages, there are seven "remembering pills" that do not contain hormones. When taking 21-day packages, a pill is taken every day around the same time for three weeks. The following week no pills are taken, and the week after that a new package begins. They take the seven inactive pills last week. If you skip this week of inactive pills, you can forget to start your new package on time. This may affect the level of hormones present in your body and may affect the effectiveness of your birth control. Only progestin pills come in 28-day packages. All pills contain progestin and are taken once a day around the same time. There are no placebo pills in a pill package only progestin. If you think you will have difficulty remembering taking a daily pill or you are worried about falling pills, you may want to consider other birth control options. Other forms of reversible birth control include diaphragms, intrauterine devices (DIU) and patches. Permanent birth control forms include vasectomy for men and tubal ligation for women. When choosing birth control, you should consider: As all medicines, birth control pills expire. Taking expired pills can result in an unplanned pregnancy, so why risk it? You should always check the expiration date on your pills before you start using them. If you have questions or concerns, your doctor or pharmacist may be able to help you. Here is Why you should really worry about the date of the explosion in your birth control pills Go through an entire bottle of Advil before it expires seems an impossible feat. We have all been faced with the choice of taking slightly expired medications or giving up them completely. But while a less effective dose of it can leave you with a headache, taking expired might leave you with much more (read: a human being in your body). If you're in, you can end up with an extra emergency package that you're staying under the sink. You know, in case anything happens to the package you use and you desperately need a spare pill. But like any other medications, birth control pills have a expiration date. It is determined by the pharmaceutical company during tests of stability and effectiveness. Normal expiration is usually 12 months, , assistant clinical professor in the obstetrics and gynaecology department at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, tells SELF. But there are some grades. "This is based on the assumption that the medication is still in its original packaging and stored in the temperature indicated in the box (usually room tempor) and assuming normal ambient humidity," he says. Limited studies—"realized primarily by the U.S. government to prepare for future emergencies where expired drugs may need to be distributed or used"—shows that most medicines are likely to be still effective anywhere from one to five years after this expiry date, if they have been left in their original packaging. These studies have not been done specifically in birth control pills, but based on the results for similar pills, Chiang says that it can be extrapolated to some extent. "Since they are in the form of a tablet, they may still be effective shortly after the expiration date or more," he says. "However, given the different exposures of temperature, ambient humidity, sunlight, etc., there may be some degradation of active hormones over time and therefore the manufacturer cannot guarantee the effectiveness beyond its own test period, which is usually 12 months. "Most of the drugs tested for the date of post-expiration of efficacy have not proven to be dangerous. "These expired drugs seem safe and non-toxic," Chiang says. But there is really no definitive answer about how much the effectiveness will fall. If there is a medicine you want to make sure it is in its 100 percent more effective, it is your birth control. What if you don't have a choice? "This is a difficult question," says Chiang. "If it has just expired recently and has no choice, it could still take it, but you should probably use a backup method, like condoms." I'd better get pregnant accidentally. Depending on the state laws you live in, you can have the pharmacist. Some states will even allow you to get an additional one-month filling to get on hand for emergencies, says Chiang. And a handful of new applications and websites are making it possible to get a Rx without physically going to a doctor's office. If you've noticed that you're taking expired pills a little too late and you want to make sure you're safe, it's available at the counter. Take it and use it as an expensive reminder to fill your recipe as soon as possible. Photo credit: Creative cream / Getty ImagesSELF does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
